Spilia is a village a few kilometers inland from the coastal town and tourist resort Kolymbari (3 kilometers away). It lies in a green plain amongst citrus trees and olive groves, about 30 kilometers west of the city of Chania. Spilia has around 275 inhabitants. According to tradition the village was named after the cave (Spilia means “cave”) of Agios Ioannis. In this cave there is a church. According to legend, this was the place where Saint John went to live after he had to flee from the Middle East. On the left wall of the last room is a kind of altar. It is said that this was also used as an altar, and Saint John slept on it as well. The path leads on through a gorge to the monastery Katholiki. The route is marked by a sign (a bit at the end of the village turn right).
Kolymbari is a seaside village located on the corner formed between the northern coastline of western Crete and Rodopos peninsula stretching towards north. Kolimbari is 24 km from the city of Chania and 12 km from the large resort of Platanias. This little Cretan village, surrounded by olive groves and the sea, has already entered the orbit of tourism development since some hotels-resorts have been built here. However, Kolymvari still remains a quiet and picturesque traditional village.
